Warren Boyce and Kristi Boyce

This time we have met the best English Amateur Ballroom couple � Warren and
Kristi Boyce. Apart from being the best they are known for appearing on almost
all competitions with their 2 years old son � Glenn. So it was not a surprise
for us that for the interview and the photo session they also
came with him. He is a lovely boy and will probably be the future next champion
of the Boyce family.
Who are they?
Kristi Boyce (from Estonia) started dancing when she was four in
her parents studio. Her mother Eve End was a top Estonian dancer and
naturally Kristi and her siblings were introduced to dancing from the very
early age.
Warren Boyce(from England) started dancing when he was six and
practically grew up in his parent's studio in Bournemouth. His
parents Lynette and Glenn Boyce were very successful dancers. They were
Blackpool winners and Amateur World Champions and only the unfortunate
sickness of Warren�s father and his early death stopped them from achieving the
best results in the professional ranks. Warren has always felt like he
should continue their career and finish what they could not achieve.

How did they get together?
Warren and Kristi were both very successful with their previous partners
in the Junior and Youth and they have competed against each other in major
competitions. In October 2000 Kristi�s current partner decided to give up
dancing and she was devastated. She knew that there was only one man in the
world who was suitable for her and he was dancing with somebody else. To
her surprise in the next issue of Dance News Kristi found out that this man,
Warren was looking for a new partner. She immediately called him and went for a
try out in England.
According to Warren he could not even dream that such a lovely and talented
girl like Kristi would like to dance with him. He was very surprised when she
called. As he said � 'The dream came true'.
Their love to each other and love of their son is the most important
factor of their relationship. We took some pictures of this lovely couple (and
their son!) and sat together in the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth,
England to ask all the questions.
Opinions, views....
Why is the popularity of dancing declining and what could be done?
Warren : "I do not think it is declining as much as it is
perceived. But I think that schools should concentrate more on the younger
generation"
How does your personal relationship relate to dancing?
Warren and Kristi : "It runs very closely. We both dance with a person we
love. It�s not just two individuals dancing together, we work together and live
together. We can�t imagine working separate ways"
What is in your opinion the best country to dance in?
Kristi : "England"
Warren: "England. All of dancing history is here. You dance on the same
floor as former masters and [in the case of Blackpool] even to the very
same music that they were dancing to. And you can say to yourself: Now it�s our
time"
What would you like to do if you were not dancing?
Kristi : "Not being able to dance is our biggest nightmare"
Warren : "I cannot really imagine. I feel dancing was something we were
destined to do"
Personality....
What is your favourite dance?
Kristi : "Tango"
Warren: "It used to be Foxtrot, but now it's usually the dance which we
are best at."
So what is your favourite latin dance?
Kristi and Warren : "Rumba. We also love dancing Foxtrot to Rumba music
[laughing]"
What is your biggest dream?
Warren : "To go all the way up in Professional Ballroom"
Kristi : "Happy family. We want to have a big family - more
children - at least another two"
What are you afraid of?
Warren: "I am afraid of heights [It sounds quite funny as Warren is
6�4� (193 cm) - Ed.] "
Kristi: "To leave our son Glenn behind at home, when we have to go
somewhere like the Far East, Singapore to compete or do shows and we cannot
take him with us."
Your favourite food?
Warren: "I love marmite [Marmite is dark brown-colored savory spread made
from the yeast that is a by-product of the brewing industry. It has a very
strong, slightly salty flavor. It is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it type of
food - Ed.]"
Kristi : "I like pasta very much"
Any food you hate?
Warren: "Seafood!"
Kristi: "Marmite!"
What is your favourite pet?
Kristi : "I like animals but I dislike the mess they make. [laughs]

Warren : "I like cats � we have cats at home"
What is your favourite hobby?
Kristi: "[laughing] tidying up the house � I love it when
everything is in order"
Warren: "We really have no time for a hobby. All the spare time we have,
we prefer to spend together with our son Glenn"
Your nicest memory?
Warren : "When Glenn was born. I was with Kristi the whole time and
I even cut the umbilical cord"
Kristi: "I cannot say that labour was my nicest memory [laughs].
Definitely the wedding was the best. It was so well organised � everything
was perfect."
Partnership....
What is your partner's biggest virtue and biggest flaw?
Kristi: "Warren is the most loving and caring person in the world! But
he annoys me sometimes with planning. I know that we have to plan many things,
but he plans our whole life"
Warren: "I like the way Kristi treats dance, the way she drives us to
achieve our next goal. We still have a very long way to go. Her biggest flaw? I
don't know, she is really perfect. I feel lucky to be with Kristi. Sometimes I
can take to heart her criticism [adds after some hesitation] I feel the
pressure of her determination"
What is your biggest virtue and biggest flaw?
Kristi: "I am determined. About the flaw? [laughing] There is
nothing wrong with me."
Warren: "Good manners - I believe I should have very good manners,
not just to my wife and friends, but to everybody. My flaws in dancing? There
is so much wrong! I still feel 5 places behind Kristi [When they started dancing
together Kristi was usually marked 5 places above Warren - Ed.] "
Passion....
What was your biggest argument about?
Kristi: "It was not an argument, but the silliest thing we did"
Warren: "When Kristi was 6 months pregnant we danced Blackpool. Doctors
told us that it was OK as long as Kristi didn't stress herself more than
usual. So we thought it was fine."
Kristi : "Yes, but six rounds! It was too much - we will never do
it again"
Do you often fight?
Warren: "We never fight! We are both very passionate about dancing.
Kristi, as a partner, feels better what is wrong and she has got a better idea
what should be improved and corrected. We both want to be the best dancers we
could be"
Friendship....
What is most important for you in friendship?
Warren : "Supporting each other"
Kristi : "Trusting each other"
Are your best friends dancers as well?
Warren : "I think that Kristi's sister is our best friend. We compete
together and although they look up to us, we are very good friends.
Kristi�s family all dance"
Kristi : "I have two sisters and one brother and they all dance. I have
sadly lost a brother and a sister in the past"
Warren : "I think this is one of the things which connected us. We both
lost someone from close family and we understand each other's grief [Warren lost
his Dad when he was ten years old - Ed. ]"
Have you got time for friends and activities other than dancing?
Warren : "No, not really. However I feel that Kristi is my best friend.
Kristi has a huge family and when we go to Estonia we kill two birds with one
stone - dance and meet friends [Warren speaks fluent Estonian according to
Kristi - Ed. ]"
Kristi : "We love spending time with just the three of us"
Fun, holidays, relaxation....
What do you like to do for fun?
Both: "Play with a train set [laugh]. We like to spend time
together with Glenn and play with him. We do not drink, do not smoke, we do not
like clubbing. I think we grew up when Glenn was born � most of our
friends of the same age do not understand us. We have a very good rapport
with older friends � friends who have children"
What is your favourite book or film?
Warren: "I like watching old dance films. I like watching old masters
dancing. It makes my hair stand on the back of my neck. It is really wonderful
"
Kristi : "I like watching 'Legally Blonde' kind of movies"
Warren: "And I have to watch them as well. [laughs]. I can catch
up with sleeping"
Could you describe your dream holidays?
Warren: "We always wanted to go to Australia. We have both been so close
to it, but never actually went there. Our schedule and � money do not allow us
to go there"
Kristi: "I would like to spend a lot of time on the beach"
Warren: "Before I met Kristi I hated beaches � now that I am with her I
have started to like it [laughs] "
Have you got time for holidays?
Both: "We have never been on proper holidays!"
You compete abroad a lot � do you also try to make a holiday out of
it?
Both : "Holidays are when you can take some time off and enjoy
it. We are generally not abroad for a long enough time to call it a
holiday. We will have plenty of time in the future when we achieve our goals "
Future...
What about Internet and dance webpages?
Warren: "It depends which site we are talking about. For example one
site [we have removed it�s name here - Ed.] was spreading unpleasant and
untrue rumours about us. And we could not get these rumours removed from there.
My favourite website is of course yours. You have the most detailed
information. If something is published anywhere on the Internet it is also
on your site. You also have many results which are not published anywhere else"
Plans for the future?
Kristi: "Professional World Champion and � more children "
Warren: "Now I know what my job is and it is very pleasant [laughs]
"
